THE Riverton Baptist church is saying ‘Huānying’, or welcome, to youngsters and their parents at a new bilingual playgroup.

Facilitator Rhonda Bullard said the multicultural playgroup would meet weekly on Wednesdays, in line with the school term and is themed.

“The playgroup will incorporate extended times of free play, fruit for morning tea, a nursery rhyme time and craft,” Mrs Bullard said.

“The playgroup is multilingual in that when it is time for the nursery rhyme section of playgroup parents will have a choice as to whether their children join a group which will sing the rhymes in Mandarin or whether they join a group which will sing them in English.

“There is also the potential to add other languages to the rhyme time.”

The first theme, Humpty Dumpty, will encourage youngsters to build the famous wall from which he falls.

Mrs Bullard said she had drawn on her studies in early childhood at Murdoch University to produce varied and interactive experiences.

“I was partly inspired to run the playgroup because I have recently completed a unit at university which explored the significance of the environment for children’s learning; the environment in fact is referred to as the ‘third teacher’,” she said.

“The importance supporting children’s home languages has been reinforced, and given that the church where I attend places a high value on including people from diverse backgrounds…I thought I would trial running a multilingual playgroup as a way of expressing these values and hopefully blessing the community.”

The playgroup will incorporate extended times of free play, fruit for morning tea, a nursery rhyme time and craft.

The cost of the playgroup is $2 per child and attendees are asked to bring a piece of fruit for morning tea.

Playgroup will run 9.30am to 11.30am Wednesday mornings at Riverton Baptist Community Church, 38 Modillion Ave North, Shelley.
