PAST students and staff have flocked to Riverton Primary School to celebrate the institution’s 70th anniversary.
More than 400 Riverton alumni and teachers descended upon the school to reminisce about their memories and discuss their lives since they graduated with their former classmates.
Six of the school’s original 21 students in 1949 were in attendance, as was former graduate Henk Vogels, who competed in the cycling at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.
Organiser Palitha Jayasekara said the reunion proved to be an emotional one, with many schoolyard chums seeing each other for the first time since they had left school.
“People came from all four corners, from as far as Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne, Carnarvon and Albany,” he said.
“When they saw their old classmates, they forgot everything and went back to their childhood memories.
“There were so many stories, they couldn’t stop talking. It was very emotional to see them touch their old classrooms.”
