Jaime ShurmerCanning Gazette

HALF of Canning’s population of 90, 207 was not born in Australia, according to a new website launched today.

Multicultural Interests Minister Paul Papalia said the 2016 Census figures were now also available on the new website called Search Diversity WA, which showcases diversity at a variety of different levels.

In Canning, a third of the population speaks a language other than English at home and 50.2 per cent of the population was born overseas.

In 2001, the population was 85,514 and just under half of that was born overseas.

India outstripped England this Census as the highest of the top five countries of birth, other than Australia.

The website has been built using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics website.

Searches can be made by nationalities statewide, or at local government or electorate level and include demographic data, education and work, cultural diversity, household data and information about disability and carers.

Search Diversity WA is available at www.omi.wa.gov.au.
