Pia van StraalenCanning Gazette

ST NORBERT College year 11 student Joyce Zhuang has placed second in a Japanese Speech Competition at the Japanese Language Teachers’ Association of Western Australia.

Held at the University of Western Australia, 20 students in primary, junior, middle and senior years prepared a three-minute speech on a topic of their own choice without the use of any notes in Japanese.

The participants then answered questions in Japanese for five minutes on issues from their speeches.

Principal Annette Morey said she was delighted with Joyce’s result.

“We are delighted that Joyce was awarded second place against extremely strong competition from other WA schools,” she said.

“Joyce’s topic was My Gift for the Future, which reflected her recent family visit to China.

“Joyce delivered her speech with strong and very confident fluency, and her intonation was particularly impressive. She answered the range of questions from the native speaker Japanese teacher with solid detail and precision.”
