Stadium funding pledge

Katelyn Booth, Canning TimesCanning Gazette

Ms Beazley announced if elected, the Labor Government would contribute $2 million through the City of Canning to ensure the Willetton Sports Club would re-open, as well as an additional $3 million directly towards the stadium.

Mr Nixon said the funding would allow upgrades to its infrastructure and would accommodate for the increasing number of local clubs using the stadium’s facilities.

‘This funding would allow us to build four more basketball courts and be able to meet the increasing demands on the stadium,’ Mr Nixon said.

‘We are always in high demand for local clubs to use to stadium and unfortunately sometimes they have to stay on a waiting list.

‘Any funding assistance is always greatly appreciated and of course this significant amount is more than what the club could fundraise.’

However, Riverton MLA Mike Nahan said the State Government did not have the ability to allocate funding via the CSRFF.

Dr Nahan said the Willetton Basketball Club had been working on a major expansion over several years but would require funding from the State and City of Canning of nearly $10 million.
