The students, a third of whom are from WA, will compete in areas including vehicle painting, retail baking, welding, construction steel work, fitting and wall and floor tiling.

Polytechnic West managing director Jill Jamieson said competitions such as WorldSkills provide students with the opportunity to benchmark their skills against the best from around Australia and the world.

“Polytechnic West works closely with our industries to ensure the skills and training delivered is well aligned with their requirements,” Ms Jamieson said.

The national competition is held in Melbourne in October; medal winners from that event will be eligible for selection in the Australian Skillaroos team to compete in Abu Dhabi in 2017.
