The 15-year-old was named 2013 Under-17 Champion in the Mountain Bike State XC championships in Greenmount last September.

He then competed in the Ride for Someone who Can’t fundraiser to beat muscular dystrophy.

Maggs had to raise $2000 to compete in the fundraiser on behalf of a 24-year-old man he knew only as Ben and had never met, who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

‘I liked the idea of riding for someone who couldn’t,’ he said, adding that his mother Donna Maggs had helped him raise the necessary funds.

Maggs said although he had coaches in both road cycling and mountain biking, he was first and foremost a mountain cyclist.

‘Mountain biking is more interesting, you have to focus more on technique and on the track, stay alert the whole time, otherwise you’ll stack it,’ he said.

Maggs is sponsored by Avanti Plus in Cannington.
