Tipping the scales: more than half City of Canning’s adult population overweight or obese

MORE than half the adult population of the City of Canning is overweight or obese and nearly 93 percent eat less than the recommended five serves of vegetables a day.

The City of Canning’s Health and Wellbeing Profile, based on 2016 figures, will be used in conjunction with currently open public survey to create a new Public Health Plan.

Residents can take part in a 10-minute survey on the issue until April 9 with prizes up for grabs, including 30-day gym memberships and a family swim pass.

Canning’s health profile shows 15.6 per cent of adults smoke, a fifth drink alcohol at levels that could cause long-term harm, and about a third of adults are not active enough.

The bulk of the population is aged between 25 and 44 years of age and a further 20,995 people are aged 45 to 64 years.

Bentley has the most disadvantage according to a socio-economic index for the area while Leeming is the most affluent suburb.

A higher proportion of residents living in the City (7.1 per cent) reported having heart disease than that of the South Metro Health Service (6.6 per cent) or WA as a whole (5.8 per cent).

Diabetes and cancer rates however were lower in Canning.

People with high blood pressure made up 18.3 percent of Canning’s population, up from WA’s rate of 15.8 per cent, and high cholesterol levels were also slightly elevated in Canning.

Obesity percentages were slightly lower at 21.9 percent compared with the state’s 27.7 per cent.

Just a small number of people however expressed a lack of control over their life, with 2.2 percent compared with the South Metro Health Service’s 5.6 per cent.
