Perth Market Authority (PMA) has given the not-for-profit organisation the small warehouse tenancy at the Canning Vale Market City site to collect and distribute fresh produce to charity groups.
‘There is a lot of produce that is delivered to our waste transfer facility for composting and mulching that is perfectly edible, but may not meet retailer specifications and can’t be sold,’ PMA chief executive officer Stephen Ward said.
Foodbank WA chief executive Greg Hebble said the amount of rescued food was expected to fluctuate over the next few weeks with further vendor and community awareness.
‘We’ve only had the warehouse one month, so it’s still early days,’ he said.
The warehouse has allowed Foodbank WA to expand its Canning Vale operations.
‘Now we’re at the market side, it’s a much easier and convenient decision for local vendors and growers to donate,’ Mr Hebble said. ‘We really appreciate the support and co-operation from PMA, and the opportunity to supply healthy fruit and vegetables to those in need.’
