Young poet delighted with competition win

The 13-year-olds imagination has just helped her win up a Write4Fun prize for her poem Gen-Why?

The Year 9 student said she wanted to write about a topic she had not attempted before, but could still relate to.

Writing lyrics gets my blood pumping more than any sport, Ruby said.

My poem is dedicated to and about my generation, and our obsession with social media as well as our priorities, which are all in the wrong places.

The Lynwood resident was one of more than 12,000 budding writers who entered the competition.

Ruby said she still could not believe she had won the prize, which included a cheque for $500.

I am still surprised because I knew I could write poetry, but I never thought I was good my English teacher Mrs Scaramella did, she said. I guess she was right.
