Where does this idea come from?
When will local government begin to be more efficient and generate greater returns from its under-used and under-performing assets, including the two-legged ones?
When will we see councils reducing their rates? Increased property values and increasing the rates are a double bonus for councils that still can’t function without wanting more and more money.
I do not mind paying my fair dues but it has come to a ridiculous stage when I see local government, like its State and Federal counterparts, spend public money unwisely but keep making taxpayers and ratepayers pay and pay.
I recall the days when council members were voluntary citizens who served the community without the many financial benefits and perks they now enjoy.
That is not to minimise the good that some community-minded and decent council members do that can’t be measured in monetary terms.
All levels of government are squeezing us to pay for their inefficiency and waste through tax increases and cuts in benefits.
In addition, it saddens me that pensioners and senior citizens who are the most vulnerable are penalised as a group.
Now we are told the Federal Government is running out of money. That’s the tip of what’s wrong and typical of the waste that we have to pay for ultimately. It is time for a rates and tax revolution.
This is not a criticism of anyone in their jobs but simply my gripe against waste, incompetence and apathy in governments resulting in higher rates and taxes and reduced benefits for people.
