Pledge automatically includes loyalty to the Queen

THERE was a discussion on the ABC breakfast show concerning the Citizenship Pledge when taking out Australian citizenship. It was pointed out that the pledge was “not to the Queen but to Australia and its people”.

The pledge states: “From this time forward, I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey.”

The oath is similar.

The fact is by pledging loyalty to Australia, the Australian people and its laws, one is also pledging loyalty to the Queen who is Australia’s sovereign head of state, the head of our Parliament and the font of our laws.
