Roe extension no solution

Russell Hall, WillettonCanning Gazette

He seems unaware of the following:

Studies done in preparation for approval of the Roe 8 extension indicated only minor reduction in traffic congestion at most controlled intersections on Leach Highway, and even increased congestion at some.

The Liberal Government has stalled on making a decision to extend Roe Highway to Stock Road ostensibly because it is waiting for EPA approval, to the extent that it has not even included funds for this project in future budgets.

Extending Roe Highway to Stock Road will for ever ruin one of Perth’s prime wetland reservations, Beeliar Regional Park, destroying areas of natural bushland that host numerous native plant, bird (including threatened black cockatoos) and animal species.

And it will introduce unknown levels of noise, light, and chemical pollution into a recreation area for the southern suburbs.

Heavy truck traffic now using Leach Highway will be forced on to narrow suburban streets in Fremantle to access port facilities if the proposed extension of Roe 8 ends at Stock Road.

Adding diesel fumes, noise and traffic congestion to the streets of Fremantle, and destroying prime recreational areas used by residents of many southern Perth suburbs, would seem to be the preferred solution for Mr Nedved, ‘as long as it is not in my back yard’.

There already exists a double-tracked railway line joining the Port of Fremantle with the light industry and distribution centres around Perth Airport.

Our Government needs to develop this existing transport route, even if the initial costs exceed those of constructing the Roe 8 extension (which is no solution at all).
