Why is club getting more money?

Staff ReporterCanning Gazette

WITH reference to the article $1m grant to club, Canning Times, May 7, why is the Liberal Government committing $1 million to resurrect the Willetton Sports Club and insisting City of Canning ratepayers provide another $1 million when:

– There are more deserving establishments in Canning that will benefit all City ratepayers, not just the alleged 5000 club members.

– The City wrote off a $700,000 debt in 1999 and the club, over the past five years, has been in serious financial difficulty, and closed in 2011, with a deficit of $256,000.

In the 30 years the club has operated, it has given nothing back to the community and all City ratepayers have had to provide funds (nearly $1 million) to keep the club afloat.
