Cannington Greyhounds: All Stars Sprint final shaping as hot contest

Pia van StraalenCanning Gazette

THIS Saturday night’s Group 2 All Stars Sprint final (520m) at Tabtouch Park Cannington is set to be a cracker.

After the success of last weekends heats, highlighted by close finishes and only 0.05 of a second separated the winning times of the dogs that came home first across the three heats the races have well and truly picked up into the Summer.

In the opening heat Cobra Clutch had to dig deep to snatch victory.

The Jamie Marsh-trained chaser conceded the lead to the quick jumping Pepper Fire but worked forward from mid-field to put himself into contention.

The pair fought tooth and nail in the home straight but Cobra Clutch had the stronger staying power and he edged ahead in the final strides to claim the race in 30.00.

In the following heat Fun Boss clung on to score in equally nail-biting fashion.

Fun Boss began sweetly from the pole to establish the early ascendancy but never looked comfortable as Weblec Belle loomed up to apply the pressure.

It came down to the wire but Fun Boss was able to hold off Weblec Belle by a neck in 30.03, with Teddy Monelli only a half-length further behind in third place.

By comparison the win of Ramifications in the final heat was relatively comfortable.

The talented chaser had been knocking on the door of late but finally broke-through for an overdue victory, his first since late July.

After a moderate start Ramifications pushed through to the front and then kicked away to cross the line four lengths ahead of Phaser Bale in 30.05.
