Carlo Chiellini and Nathan Smith scored in the second half to give Curtin a 2-1 victory at McGillivray Oval. The win earned the team a spot in the Football West Coolridge Cup’s round of 16.
Curtin dominated possession but were unable to capitalise and hit the scoreboard.
Eddie Tikoft shot wide and Bryce Young flashed a header past the post and the teams went into half-time level without a goal being registered.
After the break, UWA snatched the lead against the run of play when forward Simi Lozic scored on a set piece.
Curtin was not fazed and man-of-the-match Chiellini equalised with a header from near the post after a perfect Daniel Young corner.
In the 78th minute, Smith slid in to convert a pinpoint Jonathon Krawec cross to give the division two side the lead. Chiellini tried to finish the game himself but his long-range drive rocketed into the upright with the UWA goalkeeper beaten.
Curtin plays its first league game of the year on Saturday at Iluka Sports Complex against Joondalup City.
