Coach serves awards ace

About 25 years later, the volleyball coach has been recognised at the 2014 Sports Industry Coaches and Officials Awards.

Lewis said he had been coaching club volleyball for 22 years and state volleyball for 16 years. ‘I got into coaching as I have always had a passion for giving back and I coached all sports I have been involved with,’ he said.

‘So coaching volleyball was a natural progression.’

The 42-year-old said being involved in an international sport was a huge buzz.

He said his biggest success was when the teams he coached won the Junior National Championships, the Australian Volleyball League and the WA Volleyball League all in the one year. In the same year, Lewis was also named WA Coach of the Year and the Australian Coach of the Year.

‘I love helping develop people and to see the positive effect that sport has on young people is a tremendous feeling,’ he said.

‘The competitiveness of sport and coaching sport and being part of leading a sporting team is the motivational reason behind coaching.’
