Commonweath Games athletes return home

Eight students and three alumni travelled to Glasgow for the Games, with the 11 athletes participating in either the men’s and women’s hockey or artistic gymnastics.

Curtin students Jane-Anne Claxton, Georgina Parker, Brooke Peris and Emily Smith and alumni Jayde Taylor, Anna Flanagan and Ashleigh Nelson played hockey.

They helped the Hockeyroos win over England from a penalty shootout in the gold-medal match after the Aussies had been within 20 seconds of losing in normal time.

The men’s hockey team, the Kookaburras, claimed a fifth Commonwealth Games title.

Curtin students Daniel Beale, Simon Orchard and Matthew Swann featured in the Kookaburras’ gold medal campaign, playing in the 4-0 win over India.

Gymnast Lauren Mitchell ended her campaign with two silver medals.

Mitchell now has seven Commonwealth Games medals across her decorated career.
