Premier Cricket: Willetton’s finals hopes dashed after loss to Claremont-Nedlands

Pia van StraalenCanning Gazette

WILLETTON’S finals hopes are over after a tough defeat to league leaders Claremont-Nedlands in their Round 13 Premier Cricket clash at Cresswell Park on Saturday.

The contest was one of only three Premier Cricket matches that resumed on day two on Saturday, following last week’s rain.

Willetton’s day one score of 9-241 was not enough against a class-batting line-up led by ex-WA and Tasmania batsman Travis Birt.

Birt hit a double ton for the hosts as they reached the total with relative ease, finishing the day 8-353.

Matt Johnston (2-46) and Matt Hanna (2-46) were the best of the Dragons bowlers with two wickets each. Ross Knoll also took 2-23.

The result leaves Willetton down in 10th, 18 points outside the top six with two rounds to play.

Willetton has lost five consecutive games since the Christmas break.
