Riverton Aquanauts fall short against Thornlie, but retain overall lead

THE Riverton Aquanauts were unable to repeat their Round One success when they competed in the second round of the Summer Series South East Metropolitan swimming competition.

Pipped at the post by hosts Thornlie Swimming Club, the Aquanauts came a comfortable second, leading the Lesmurdie Legends by 178 points.

Overall the Aquanauts remain in the overall lead, with a total of 1167 points to Thornlie’s 1114 points.

Head coach Gemma Herrington said the second round was more competitive for swimmers.

“Round two was a tough round, as we lost three swimmers to broken bones in the last two weeks, so the team of 27 swimmers had to dig deep to get the points for the team,” she said.

Riverton are keen to redeem themselves next weekend, when they host the third round at home.

“The upcoming final round is going to produce some friendly competition between all the swimmers and definitely some strong swims will be needed in order to take out that first place,” Ms Herrington said.

“Our small club is looking forward to the challenge and all of the swimmers will be cheering their team mates on.”

Round three of the Summer Series will be held at Riverton Leisureplex on November 12, with the top two teams after these three rounds progressing to the finals in December.
