OVER 150 of Perth’s top bowls players are set to descend on Rossmoyne Bowl’s Club for one of the state’s most prestigious bowls tournaments.

The club won the hosting rights for the 42nd iteration of the Internations Lawn Bowls tournament, which takes place this weekend.

The team-based format features eight teams Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Italy, England, Croatia, Scotland and the Rest of the World) competing in round-robin competition for glory.

While there is no prize money on offer, the tournament acts as a fundraiser for Perth’s Children’s Hospital, which tournament director Grahame Maesepp said they had raised over $100,000 for in the past two decades.

Mr Maesepp said the tournament was one of the highlights of the bowls calendar, combining friendly competition with charitable fundraising.

“It involves people from all over Perth, but it’s invitation only. It’s hard to get into; once you’re in, you don’t want to leave, because once you leave you can’t get back in again,” he said.

“They come representing their country, so it gives them a bit of pride. It’s all about fellowship, they get together for a great weekend with their fellow bowlers.

“There’s a lot of competition in it. There’s no prize money, you just win the trophy; it’s all for glory.”
