SBL: Willetton suffer double loss against Lakeside

Jessica NicoCanning Gazette

WILLETTON Tigers suffered a disappointing double loss for the second week in a row after both the men and women went down to Lakeside Lightning on Saturday night.

The night started with the Willetton women up against the ladder leading Lighting, who have only dropped one game to date.

Despite going in as the underdogs, the Tigers started the game strongly and were in touch at quarter time, down 21-18.

The margin remained at three points at halftime, but a huge third quarter to Lakeside, who scored a massive 29 points to Willetton’s 13, extended their lead to 19 at the last break.

It was a lead the Tigers closed a bit but were unable to chase down entirely and they eventually went down 86-72.

Ashli Payne was one of the few who found her range, sinking 28-points include five from eight at the three point line, while Leah Cotton (12) was the only other player to reach double digits.

In the men’s game, Willetton were never quite able to take the lead out of Lakeside’s grasp in their 113-91 defeat.

The majority of the game was an arm wrestle as the teams went into the final break with just four points separating them, but a demonstrative 38-point final quarter from the visitors saw them quash any chance of a Tigers win to run out 22 point victors.

Badou Diagne top scored for the Tigers with 23 points, while Jay Bowie (21) and Damien Scott (15) also performed strongly in the paint.

Both teams will be looking to bounce back when they take on the Cockburn Cougars on July 6 at the Willetton Basketball Stadium.

Tip off for the women is at 6.30pm with the men to follow straight after at 8.30pm.
