Soccer: Centenary Football Club women’s team finishes 2017 undefeated

Jessica NicoCanning Gazette

IT was a season dreams are made of.

The Centenary Football Club’s only female team entered the Metro South Division 3 competition with a slew of new players but with a drive to push the competition in every game.

It was a mindset that paid dividends as the team went through the 2017 season undefeated, conceding just 12 goals in 18 games to be crowned champions in its inaugural year.

Bumped up a division for season 2018, head coach Zane Abrahams said the season had been “a huge thrill” and the small club was now looking to expand their women and junior programs.

“There is some interest from new players with room for more and it was decided to grow with the trend towards women’s soccer as a fun safe contact sport for girls both junior and senior,” he said.

“With four high schools close by we look forward to interest from junior age players joining but seniors are also encouraged, as this is a good club for all ages and some of our players are young mums.

“This sport provides a level of new training ideas with fitness and skills offered to players who appreciate outdoor activity as a way of life.”

Centenary FC will hold a come and try session at Centenary Park, Wilson from 6pm January 17.
