THREE Willetton karate aficionados will represent their country on the big stage after being selected to compete at the upcoming Oceania Championships.

West Coast Karate’s Rebecca Sullivan will compete in the senior female -68kg kumite, while Hannah Sullivan will compete in the cadet female +54kg kumite and Charlie Baines in the 12/13 Male +45kg kumite.

They will go up against the best competitors from New Zealand, Fiji, Guam, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Tahiti, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands in their respective divisions.

West Coast Karate chief instructor Brian Sullivan said he was proud all three were selected to the national team.

“They have been considered for selection based on past tournament performances at national level-all have won their division at the Australian Open and Australian National Championships on a number of occasions,” he said.

“Their selection is not a surprise, it comes after being at the top of their divisions in Australia for some considerable time.

“We expect all three will account for themselves well and are hoping that they are all successful.”

The Oceania Karate Championships will be held in New Zealand from May 18 to 20.
