23 WA heritage projects share in $1.22 million worth of funding

Staff WriterCockburn Gazette

THE Albany Bell Castle in Maylands and a former gold boom warehouse in the heart of Fremantle’s West End are among 23 projects that will share in $1.22 million worth of funding under the State Government’s 2017-18 Heritage Grants Program.

The grants program, overseen by the Heritage Council of Western Australia, offers dollar-for-dollar funding for grants of up to $100,000, including conservation plans to help guide the works.

The Heritage Council’s grants program is one of the few grant programs in Australia that assists private owners with the costs associated with maintaining heritage sites.

Since the program’s inception in 1997, 768 heritage projects have received grants totalling more than $19.5 million.

The work to preserve the former gold boom warehouse in Fremantle, which is now the PS Art Space, would help offer a “glimpse of the development of Fremantle as a port town”, according to Heritage Minister David Templeman.

“This year, a $54,697 grant will assist with conservation work and structural repairs to this 1907 Pakenham Street warehouse including repairs to the brick facade and reinstating original architectural detail above the entrance,” Mr Templeman said.

“Fremantle’s West End was permanently included in the State Register of Heritage Places last year as a rare example of a highly intact port city business district during the gold boom period.

“This unusually intact warehouse, built for the storage and handling of goods, offers a glimpse of the development of Fremantle as a port town and the import-export gateway of the State.”

Five projects will receive the maximum grant of $100,000, including Fremantle’s Oceanic Hotel and Ashburton’s Peedamulla Homestead.

Rockingham’s Bell Cottage will also receive a grant this year.
