Age no barrier to following passion

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

BOSKO Borkovic has had a love of gardening for as long as he can remember.

Mr Borkovic has worked hard to create a beautiful garden oasis in every home he has lived in since he immigrated to Australia from Serbia in the 1970s, first in Queensland then onto rural WA and all over metropolitan Perth.

Now 90 years old and living in Spearwood’s Villa Dalmacia, Mr Borkovic’s love of spending time in the garden has not waned.

Pots of colourful flowering plants take centre stage outside his room, and Villa staff have given him free reign over a larger residential courtyard, where he can often be found tending to multiple garden plots.

His passion is so contagious there’s no shortage of Villa neighbours willing to help water the garden when he is off on day trips.

Mr Borkovic’s daughter Dusanka Koljibabic said her father had been recognised a number of times for his efforts.

“When they moved to Bunbury he was awarded a certificate for having the best garden and when they lived in Kelmscott he was awarded a certificate again for his garden,” she said.

“When he moved to Villa Dalmacia he asked if he could do a bit of gardening and they said ‘go for it’.

“He loves gardening, that’s just what he does.”

Mr Borkovic said he loved to make Australia more beautiful by working on his garden.
