Bibra Lake: dangerous intersections to be improved under Black Spot Program

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

TWO dangerous Cockburn intersections will undergo improvement works as part of the 2018-19 State Black Spot Program.

Under the latest round of funding, $256,000 has been allocated for stage one of works to the intersection of Phoenix Road and North Lake Road, which will include extending the existing left and right turn lanes on North Lake Road, constructing a second right turn lane on Phoenix Road and upgrading street lights.

The City will contribute $160,000 to the project, with funding for stage two expected to be allocated in the next few years.

Further up the road, $150,000 has been set aside for safety improvements at the Stock Road-Phoenix Road intersection.

City of Cockburn engineering and works director Charles Sullivan said they had welcomed the funding announcement.

“While more projects were hoped for, the City understands that there are severe constraints on State funding at present,” he said.

“Traffic and road safety are the number one priority for our residents and $18.5m has been allocated in the 2018-19 budget to improve movement and safety on our roads.”

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said more than 100 upgrades worth $25m would be carried out in the coming months.

“The Black Spot Program is a joint State-local government initiative and is delivering real safety benefits to road users,” she said.

“The State provides two-thirds of the funds for safety improvement projects on local roads, with local governments funding the remaining one third.

“It aims to further improve road safety across the state, reducing the trauma and suffering of crash victims and their loved ones.”

In March, the Federal Government announced an $110,000 upgrade to Cockburn Central’s Beeliar Road-Wentworth Parade intersection under the 2018-19 Australian Government Black Spot Program.

“This work involves extension of the existing left-turn lane so that left-turn traffic is not obstructed by the lengthy queue of right-turn traffic at the T-intersection,” Mr Sullivan said.

“The street lighting will be upgraded and the City’s contribution is $36,667.”
