Claude Harvey kicks off ‘mowerthon’ to raise funds for kids

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

WALKATHONS and telethons are the norm when it comes to fundraising, but not for Claude Harvey, who kicked off a ‘mowerthon’ in Fremantle last week.

The 70-year-old Queenslander has picked WA to continue his fundraising adventure with his trusty lawnmower, as he looks to raise $1 million for Bravehearts, an organisation that helps educate and protect children from sexual assault.

The 26-day mowerthon will see Mr Harvey push his mower 2000km around WA, kicking off from Fremantle and hitting towns like Northam, Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Albany and Margaret River.

He said he was looking forward to taking the Braveheart message through WA for the first time, and encouraged locals to donate a few coins as he travelled.

“Protecting kids is something very close to my heart,” he said.

“Every child should be given the opportunity to be educated with important personal safety knowledge and skills to keep safe.

“I’ve seen Bravehearts’ education show ‘Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure’ visit my grandson’s school but every Aussie child in every school in every town has the right to benefit from this program.”
