COCKBURN Mayor Logan Howlett has hit back at his counterpart in Melville, following a push by the neighbouring council to talk up benefits of the Perth Freight Link.

The Melville council recently released images depicting how a large number of local homes and businesses might be affected by upgrades to two major Leach Highway intersections.

The images, which were supported by a video featuring Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey, paint a glum picture for local residents, who the council says will be “directly and profoundly impacted” if the Perth Freight Link is not completed.

The visuals were produced independently by the City of Melville and have not been assessed by Main Roads WA or the Department of Transport.

They are based on the grade separation constructed at the intersection of Leach Highway and Orrong Road, which has been overlaid on the intersections where Leach Highway meets North Lake and Stock roads.

But Mr Howlett said Melville was alone in its support for the road, with the cities of Cockburn, Fremantle, Kwinana and the Town of East Fremantle opposed to it.

“The Government’s current plan for Roe Highway only takes the freight to Stock Road and the proposed Roe 9 extension is another four years away,” he said.

“In the interim, all freight would end up going through the Stock Road intersection.

“Thereafter the mother of all traffic jams is moved to the end of the planned tunnel – right in the middle of East Fremantle and the gateway to Fremantle.

“What happens to the businesses in these locations?”

Mr Howlett said building an outer harbour in Cockburn Sound, which will throw up its own environmental questions, would take freight traffic out of Melville, Fremantle, East Fremantle and avoid adverse impacts in Cockburn.
