COCKBURN resident Matthew Zagami celebrated his 15th birthday in style, soaring to new heights as part of his first solo flight at Jandakot Airport last month.

Matthew a student of the Royal Aero Club of WA aviation school has had an interest in aviation from a young age.

A Royal Aero Club of WA spokeswoman said Matthew used to look up at the sky and point at the planes flying past, always excited at seeing them.

“The older he got, the more he loved seeing them – until he found out that he could fly one on his own when he turned 15,” she said.

While Matthew’s parents and grandparents were nervous watching him it was a dream he said he had wanted to achieve for so long.

“I’m happy that I did my solo because that is my second achievement in flying,” he said.

“My first achievement was my trial flight but this first solo was an amazing achievement and I’m happy I completed it.”

Setting his sights even higher, Matthew hopes to one-day become a Boeing 787-900 Captain for Qantas or Emirates.
