Fire at Target causes evacuation of Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre

UPDATE 3.23PM: COCKBURN Gateway has reopened but Target remains closed after the shopping centre was evacuated this afternoon.

A Cockburn Gateway spokeswoman confirmed the centre had reopened for normal trading after a small fire in Target.

“It is our understanding that Target Cockburn Gateway will reopen for trade tomorrow,” she said.

Earlier, local resident Carly Pilton, who was at the centre, said shoppers had been evacuated after a reported fire in Target, believed to have started in the kids clothing department.

Ms Pilton, who was forced to abandon her trolley of shopping in Coles, said the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) had arrived on the scene.

“There’s a lot of people standing around outside,” Ms Pilton said.

“Everyone is trying to get out of the carpark at once.

“It’s a bit chaotic.”

A DFES spokeswoman said they received a call at 1.03pm, and confirmation the fire had been extinguished came at 1.09pm.

Four DFES crews remain on the scene.
