Belinda CiprianoCockburn Gazette

RESIDENTS of the City of Cockburn’s East ward will have four candidates to choose from at its extraordinary election on May 2.

Tarun Dewan, Ian Whitfield, Lara Kirkwood and Tony Toledo will appear first, second, third and fourth respectively on the ballot paper after the WA elections draw last week.

Mr Whitfield, a long-time resident and former City councillor, said in his candidate statement he was looking forward to the possibility of making the City the best place to work, live and recreate.

Cockburn Chat founder and Aubin Grove Community Association vice-president Ms Kirkwood’s candidate statement said she hoped to bring an independent approach to working with people of all backgrounds to promote the community’s wellbeing and safety.

Mr Dewan’s statement said he would look to promote transparency, good governance and the responsible use of ratepayers’ money.

Mr Toledo said his biggest issue was the lack of a long- term vision and plan for the ward.

The extraordinary election comes after the sudden death of long-standing councillor Steve Portelli on Australia Day.

Voting packages are expected to arrive in mail boxes this month.
