Fremantle Hospital nurse finalist in prestigious WA award

AN Aubin Grove resident has been named a finalist in the WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards.

Fremantle Hospital enrolled nurse Irene Chan started her working life a high school English teacher in Malaysia before she migrated to Australia and decided to follow her dream of becoming a nurse.

Today, Ms Chan is one of three finalists in the Excellence in Enrolled Nursing category of the WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards.

“I have always loved being able to help other people,” she said.

“I consider myself to be patient and empathetic person and love nursing patients back to health.

“Seeing a patient getting back on their feet after a debilitating illness, such as a stroke, is the most rewarding part of my job.

“I am very grateful that all my hard work and dedication to my job has paid off and it is an honour to be recognised in such a way.”

Ms Chan is known for her patient advocacy and person-centred approach to care, traits that saw co-worker Sally Lawry nominate her for the prestigious award.

“Irene pays incredible attention to detail, has excellent assessment skills, a very strong work ethic and is a strong team member,” Ms Lawry said.

“She goes above and beyond and really is one of those nurses who make a difference.”

Winners will be announced on May 11.
