Lara Kirkwood elected as City of Cockburn East ward councillor

RESIDENTS of the City of Cockburn’s East ward have a new councillor after Lara Kirkwood was voted in at the City’s extraordinary election yesterday.

Councillor Kirkwood received 2409 votes, 607 more than second placed Tarun Dewan with 1802 votes.

He was followed by Ian Whitfield on 806 and Tony Toledo with 574.

Cr Kirkwood, also the founder of Cockburn Chat and Aubin Grove Community Association vice-president, said in her candidate statement she hoped to bring an independent approach to working with people of all backgrounds to promote the community’s wellbeing and safety.

Following the news of her appointment Cr Kirkwood thanked residents for their support.

“I am absolutely humbled to announce that I have been elected as your next councillor for East ward,” she said.

“Thank you to all the people who voted this election and supported me.

“The hard work starts tomorrow.”

Cr Kirkwood, who replaces long-standing councillor Steve Portelli following his sudden death on Australia Day,paid tribute to the former councillor on her Facebook page.

“Steve you will never be forgotten and I am honoured to even attempt to do as many great things as you have done for Cockburn,” she said.
