LEEUWIN Ocean Adventure Foundation bosun Andy Laurie crossed the Tasman Sea, albeit via the air, to experience life aboard a New Zealand tall ship.

The Woodside Crew Exchange Program opportunity gave Mr Laurie a chance to sail from Wellington to Auckland aboard the SV Tenacious, a tall ship specifically designed and built to be accessible to people with a disability.

During the trip, he was part of regular watch rotations and learned about the ship’s more modern rigging technology.

He said it was a great experience to be a part of.

“What a great ship to see operate and what a great bunch of people to meet along the way. Wellington to Auckland was great sailing,” he said.

“The trainee crew are a mix of physical abilities, including those in wheelchairs.

“It can be sailed and handled from deck so as to include everyone, regardless of their physical abilities.”
