Music and literature unite in The Sound of Picture Books

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

MUSIC and picture books united when the West Australia Symphony Orchestra and The Literature Centre took a unique show on the road.

The Sound of Picture Books saw a group of WASO musicians, author Danny Parker and illustrator Matt Ottley take to the stage to combine symphonies and storytelling in a way that brought three picture books to life.

Carey Baptist College was one of just three WA schools to experience the show in the comfort of their own school.

A Carey Baptist College spokesperson said the shows were highly interactive and relevant for each age group they performed to.

Mr Ottley said the show allowed audiences to see the books in a different light.

“I started putting music to stories six years ago,” he said.

“For difficult topics such as the effects of war for refugees I drew half of the images in the book with my left hand, as if a child had drawn them, because drawing in the normal realist style would have been too dark.”
