Staff WriterCockburn Gazette

A POLICE officer has received stitches after being injured when a glass door was shut on him during a disturbance at a Beeliar home last night.

About 9.40pm police were called to a home with reports of a disturbance.

On arrival they located a 25-year-old man who appeared to be under the effects of a substance and while they were talking with him, he became highly aggressive and ran towards female occupants of the home.

Fearing for the man’s safety and that of others, an officer chased after him calling to him to stop.

The man entered the home through the front glass door and slammed it closed.

The officer following him was only partway through the door when it was slammed and the force of the door being closed caused the glass to shatter and cut his shoulder.

Further inquiries by police resulted in information being obtained that while the man had been outside earlier, a neighbour approached him to see if he and his family were okay.

Police allege the man attacked the male neighbour and the assault stopped when the neighbour’s son hit the man’s body with a baseball bat.

It is further alleged the man caused a significant amount of damage to the inside of the home.

The man was conveyed to hospital for assessment and the injured officer was taken to hospital where he received four stiches to his shoulder before being released.

Inquiries are continuing.
