Pop up forest for Hamilton Hill cafe

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

A SPECIALLY designed forest will pop up in Hamilton Hill this weekend.

Local sustainability guru and director of The Forever Project Chris Ferreira joined a team of workers in transforming the outdoor area at Hamilton Hill’s the Pear Tree Caf, installing a collection of waterwise advanced trees and shrubs, wastewise landscaping with recycled materials and bespoke art pieces and a community arts wall.

Mr Ferreira said the idea for the pop up forest came after they realised there was a lot of “hot, degraded and bare” concrete areas that needed some greenery.

“We know through our work the magic of trees and other plants to help heal and cool a space and to transform it into a wonderful and much loved community space, so the idea of the pop up forest was born, an instant effect in an area that has degraded over a long time,” he said.

“The design is deceptively simple, a recycled scaffolding frame and metal baskets filled with recycled rubble all flanked and softened by advanced waterwise trees and shrubs.

“We know this site has the potential to not only become a community haven but a great chance to educate and inspire people to make their own changes in their own spaces.

“I hope people get a chance to see how easy it is and how important it is to transform community spaces, how this simple pop up forest can lift the value and enjoyment in this space and perhaps give audience members the inspiration and confidence to try to create their new green spaces in their own homes and gardens.”

The public is invited to a demonstration and celebration event at the Pear Tree Caf from 1pm June 22.
