South Coogee PS students send support to troops for Christmas

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

PILES of food, toiletries and gifts are filling South Coogee Primary School as students create Christmas care packages to send to Australian troops.

As well as everyday items such as biscuits, socks, deodorants, coffee, magazines, puzzle books and pens, South Coogee students are also packaging up pictures and letters of support to send to Australian defence personnel on active duty.

South Coogee PS teacher Lorrena Duce said it was a great way for the school to thank them for their service.

“In 2017 it was just two classes who were participating, we sent 19 boxes and hope to send more this year as a whole school initiative,” she said.

“Many hadn’t realised that there were soldiers deployed or that they didn’t get to come home for Christmas so they were keen to send Christmas cards and messages to the service men and women.

“I think its important for the students to be involved in initiatives like this because it makes them aware of the world, and develops an understanding and empathy for others.

“It also lets the Armed forces know that the wider community support them and are thinking of them whilst they are away from their families and we are with our families at Christmas.
