South Coogee PS students sing, play for national initiatives

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

THURSDAY was a day of fun while learning for South Coogee Primary School students, who took part in two national initiatives on the same day.

More than 400 South Coogee students joined half a million children from across the country to sing the same song at the same time as part of the Music: Count Us In program.

South Coogee PS music teacher Tracy Simon said it was the first year the school had taken part and the students had been really excited.

“It is important for students to be involved in Count Us In as it exists as an advocate for music in Australian schools,” she said.

“It is a music program, not just about learning a song, and this has given students the opportunity to learn how to write lyrics, see footage of how the song was written and then see how it was made in the recording studios.”

Following the performance the students ditched their desks for Outdoor Classroom Day, where they took part in a number of fun, educational activities such as scavenger hunts, mud play and drumming circles.

“The students enjoyed their Outdoor Learning day because it got them out of the classroom and doing different activities outside including climbing, outdoor challenges and working with their buddy classes,” Ms Simon said.
