Spearwood: 16 new Kent Street apartments officially open

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

HOUSING minister Peter Tinley was in Spearwood on Wednesday to officially open a new 16-apartment development in Kent Street.

The $3.6 million project, which aims to provide a wider variety of housing options in the area, was a joint partnership between the Department of Communities and Dale Alcock Projects.

The two-storey development replaces a former public housing complex which was demolished in 2016.

Mr Tinley said it was part of the State Government’s Affordable Housing Action Plan to provide more than 35,000 new homes for people on low to moderate incomes.

“The Housing Industry Forecast Group’s latest report identifies multi-residential dwelling construction as an important plank in the recovery of WA’s housing market, and notes the challenge posed by a lack of housing stock diversity,” he said.

“This development will bring much-needed diversity and choice to Spearwood and increasing the supply of these sorts of dwellings is a key component of the Government’s plan to limit urban sprawl.

“The State Government will continue to work with the private sector to increase the supply of new housing, with a firm focus on the affordable end of the market.”
