CHILDREN as young as 18 months can enjoy a fun 30 minutes at Newton Primary School as part of a weekly literary program.

Tales for Tots gives children aged 18 months to pre-school age and their parents the chance to enjoy a book, sing rhymes, colour and play with blocks and Lego.

Newton Primary School chaplain Sheba Thomas said the program encouraged early literacy and listening skills.

“The parents are happy to bring their children. They are happy to come and it gives them a time to relax, chat with the other Mums and share their week,” she said.

“The children enjoy the singing and playing together.

“Having this program in the primary school encourages familiarity between the children, they may go to the same class in the future so they would know each other.

“It develops their listening skills, helps them to sit still for a few minutes, interact with the information received from the story, colour then sing and play together.”

The session runs Monday mornings from 9am to 9.30am.
