Success: Movember for mental health at Emmanuel Catholic College

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

WHETHER it’s Hulk Hogan, Charlie Chaplin, Freddie Mercury or Tom Selleck, Emmanuel Catholic College’s male staff had plenty of iconic moustaches to draw inspiration from for their Movember fundraiser.

Not just a way to raise much needed funds, the 17 staff members participating in the popular Movember Foundation event are using it to broach issues surrounding male mental and physical health with the young men they teach.

Emmanuel Catholic College teacher Thomas Ryan said it was important the students saw them as leaders on important issues.

“As staff we are often dealing with issues and educating students of the importance to support each other in developing or maintain a healthy state of mind,” he said.

“Participating in Movember is a great way to reinforce these ideas to students and the community, that we take seriously and strongly support mental health.

“Our main goal is to raise awareness and promote discussions around the topic of men’s mental health.

“Acknowledging these issues is one way we can help build an environment where mental health is something we can support and openly discuss.”

Female staff members are also getting behind the initiative through sponsorships for each kilometre they walk.
