Volunteer recognised for nine years of service to others

Ben SmithCockburn Gazette

HE joined St John Ambulance out of romance, but Paul Clune says the love has been reciprocated for almost a decade.

Mr Clune was recently recognised for nine years of volunteer work with St John’s Event Health Service, the longest time any volunteer has spent with that team.

The Spearwood resident said his involvement with St John stemmed from his wife, who recently celebrated a major milestone of her own.

“I joined St Johns to get closer to my wife, she’s been a member for 20 years this year and I really wanted to do something she enjoyed,” he said.

While it was his relationship which bought him into the organisation, Mr Clune said the friends he made enticed him to continue his involvement.

“When I first joined I was shy and very withdrawn, and every year with St Johns I came out of my shell, I got to learn a lot of new things and met a lot of lovely people,” he said.

Mr Clune, who operates out of the service’s Wanneroo base, said he felt rewarded working with others to help people.

“Being with other people with the same mindset, we get to share experiences, work together and be one service,” he said.

“I’m a nurse myself and being with St John has helped me develop those skills and be more part of the medical healthcare profession.”
