Wattleup woman providing warmth for Perth’s homeless

Jessica NicoCockburn Gazette

AS winter draws closer, many of Perth’s homeless are shivering their way through the cold days and nights.

It is a situation Wattleup resident CaAtherine Meredith is looking to improve as she collects donations of warm clothes, blankets and sleeping bags that she can pass on to those doing it tough.

Ms Meredith said she got the idea after hearing how many people were experiencing homelessness in Perth.

“It got me thinking about how could we do something to make a difference,” she said.

“I was visiting a friend and saw she was cooking meals for the homeless and I said I’d put the call out for blankets, sleeping bags, socks and jumpers.”

She said community generosity had also allowed her to successfully donate more than 20 Mothers Day goodie packs to a local women’s refuge.

“It’s been amazing, I’ve had over ten car loads of donations for both though we are still needing socks, blankets and sleeping bags for the homeless,” she said.

“It’s so important for us all to give back, you will never know if or when you will need help.

“Being able to give back to our community is something we can all do.”

Ms Meredith said she would be collecting warm items for the homeless until the end of July, which will then be donated to Homelessness We Care.
