THREE teams from the Cockburn Cougars and Lakeside Lightning have been dubbed 2018 Western Australia Basketball League champions.

As the season came to a close on Sunday with 26 separate grand finals, Cockburn’s U20 men came out on top in their game with a convincing 89-66 win against the Perry Lakes Hawks.

Zachary Watkinson and Joshua Kelly top scored with a huge 26 points each, while William Yarran (13) and Lachlan Coutinho (11) also reached double digits.

Watkinson capped off the win with the U20 Men’s MVP award.

In the U18-2 Men competition, Lakeside proved too strong for East Perth and came away 88-76 victors.

Justin Bennett sunk 20 points for the Lightning, while Michael Vella scored 12 and teammates Joshua Harwood, Ezekiel Grida and Kaidyn Burd contributed with 11 points each.

It was more of a nail-biter in the U16 Girls Championship Division grand final, with Lakeside taking out a narrow 60-58 victory over the Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Danielle Wardle was strong in the paint to score a team-high 16, while Kyrah Daniels (11) and Mia Jacobs (10) also scored double digits.

In other grand final results, Cockburn’s U18 Men Championship Division team lost their grand final against Perry Lakes 87-73, while their U16-4 boys and U16-3 girls went down to Kalamunda Eastern Suns 94-74 and Perry Lakes 61-58 respectively.

The Cougar’s U14-2 Girls lost 58-55 in a close one against Perry Lakes.

Lakeside’s U16-2 Girls dropped their grand final to Joondalup 78-67, while the U14-3 Girls also fell to the Wolves 48-26.

Among the youngest of the hundreds of players who took to the court, Lakeside’s U12-3 Girls and U12-3 Boys lost their grand finals against Willetton 34-21 and 64-44 respectively.

Despite his team not making the grand final, Lakeside’s Matthew Teale was awarded the U18 Championship Division Men’s MVP.
