FOUR Cockburn softballers will realise their dreams of playing at a national level after they were selected to play for WA.

Cockburn Cougars Softball Club’s Isaac Larkin-Kay and Trent Wood, both 15, Breanna Goodwin (17) and Amber Hinchliffe (14) will don the black and gold uniform of WA for big national competitions in January.

Isaac and Trent will both play in the U17 National Softball Championships in South Australia, while Breanna will compete in the corresponding U19 championship in New South Wales and Amber will maintain home field advantage as part of the U15 girls regional competition to be held in Mirrabooka.

Breanna said her mother had inspired her to take up diamond sports at an early age but that she still felt a sense of unpreparedness when she attended the trials.

“I went down to the first state trial, I was so scared because it was just after my first competitive season and I thought everyone was going to be better than me but everyone was mixed development wise so it was really good,” she said.

“I usually play first base, I’m just learning to pitch so that’s going to be one of my roles at state and then I’ll probably just play third base when needed.

“Hopefully I’ll be on the field a fair bit, I’ve been training really hard and supporting my team.

“I’d love to go to college or play for Australia, that’s my long term goal, but for now I’m just working towards what I can.

“The club here has really built me into the player I am today, if I didn’t play for them I don’t think I would have stayed with softball so I’m happy I started here.”

The Cockburn Cougars Softball Club is fundraising to help the players travel for the competition.
