East Fremantle records first win of the season after downing Perth at Shark Park

Bryce LuffCockburn Gazette

The Sharks, after trailing by 23 points at the main change, ran rampant in the second half to chalk up their first points of the season, 19.17 (131) to 11.7 (73).

Corey Holmes added a goal to his team-high 28 disposals, while Jayden Schofield (25 disposals), Tom Marshall (24), Thomas Bennett (23) and Ben Harding (23) saw plenty of the football.

Tim Bristow bagged three goals in the win, as did Jesse Mirco and Nathan Fahey.

For Perth, Clinton Jones led the way for disposals with 31. He also kicked one goal.

Matt Thompson, Mitchell Henderson and Jake Schleicher kicked two goals each.

Perth, who sat two games ahead of the bottom-placed Sharks before the first bounce, got the jump on the hosts to lead by four goals at the first change.

The Sharks won the second quarter by one point, but much of their early work was undone when Perth worked their way out to a handy buffer before the long break.

But the hosts were a refreshed team in the third quarter, moving the ball quickly and cutting off Perth thrusts forward across half-back.

The Sharks kicked 8.8 in the third quarter and, if not for some missed opportunities and a late goal to Perth’s Mitchell Henderson, could have had the points in the bag at the last change.

It mattered little as the Sharks turned a 26-point lead into a 58-point win with a further six goals in the final term.

South Fremantle consolidated second spot on the table after a 16.15 (111) to 10.4 (64) win over West Perth at Joondalup Arena on Saturday.
