THE WA women’s lacrosse team has returned from the Singapore Open as champions.

The team of 14 women, which included East Fremantle Lacrosse Club’s Kerry Allen and Hamilton Hill resident Melanie Goddard, represented Australia at the international competition where they defeated Japan 7-5 to take out the title after going through the opening rounds undefeated.

The competition also included teams from Singapore, Shanghai, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

WA captain and Wembley Lacrosse Club member Shendelle Oliver said the team had rallied hard to secure the championship against some tough opposition.

“I could not be prouder of this incredible group of women,” she said.

“We knew the final was going to be a tough one with the weather conditions and the Japanese turned up with their A Game.

“They were physical and fast, but our midfielders dominated the centre draws and our defence kept applying incredible defensive pressure.

“We were patient and just kept taking our opportunity which saw us come out on top.

“This was definitely a team win.”

Wembley Lacrosse Club’s Olivia Robinson was awarded the Most Valuable Player award.
