BASKETBALL

A celebration of women’s round was not enough to get the Cockburn Cougars’ women over the line against the Joondalup Wolves on Friday night.

The visitors took an early lead before Cockburn, donning pink socks and hair scrunchies to celebrate the role of women in basketball, clawed their way back to parity in the third quarter.

Both teams exchanged buckets for the majority of the third before the ladder-leading Joondalup put their foot down and ran away with the 84-68 win.

Import Kisha Lee kept the Cougars in the game, dropping a game-high 35 points, but captain Vanessa Michael (10 points) was the only other player to reach double digits.

An injury to men’s captain Gavin Field in the third quarter struck a massive blow to the Cougars in their match against the Wolves.

After allowing the visitors to get off to a quick start, Cockburn dragged the margin back and went neck and neck with Joondalup for most of the game until Field limped off the court with a leg injury.

Field failed to return for the rest of the match and Joondalup took advantage of Cockburn losing their main man, securing the 86-80 win.

Jaarod Holmes top scored for the Cougars with 18 points while Seva Chan (14), Jake Harris (13) and Field (11) also played strongly.

Across town, Lakeside Lightning’s women demolished East Perth by 50 points, keeping their opponents to just 36 points for the whole match while sinking 86 themselves.

Ashleigh Grant top scored for Lakeside with 22 points in the lopsided game, while Claire Jacobs hit a season’s best 17.

The Lakeside men were not so successful in their match, going down to East Perth 88-82.

Former Perth Wildcat Drew Williamson kept the Eagles’ on top of the visitors with 23 points, including five triples, while Lakeside’s Rowan Mackenzie dropped a game-high 24 points.

After nine rounds, Lakeside’s women and men sit 2nd and 4th on their respective ladders while Cockburn are in 11th and 12th.

Cockburn will play a double header in round 10, first taking on the Warwick Senators away on May 17 before returning home to host the Mandurah Magic on May 18.

Tip off for the home game is from 5pm for the women and 7pm for the men.

Lakeside’s men will travel to take on the Goldfields Giants on May 18 while their women will have the bye.

No WAFL matches were scheduled due to the WA vs SA state match.

RUGBY

A trio of wins capped off a good weekend of rugby for the Harrisdale ARKS.

Taking on the Coastal Cavaliers, the Premier Grade game saw an arm wrestle in the first half with the score 3-3 at the main break.

The ARKS took more control in the second half with prop Levi Auvae scoring the first try of the game.

ARKS then followed up with a try to centre Gershom Adams after some enterprising play between Tommy Fifita-Tovo and captain Russell Burges.

A yellow card to Cavaliers for repeated infringements didn’t help their cause and Burges soon added a try of his own.

A try late in the half by Cavaliers after a rolling maul made the score a bit closer but ARKS ran out 18 – 8 winners.

Despite missing key players through injury, including captain Blair Gibbons, the ARKS third grade team got off to a flyer when a scything break by fullback Joshua Upson led to a try from winger Cody Davis.

Another couple of tries had the ARKS enjoying a comfortable 29-5 lead at halftime, but they started the second half poorly with a yellow card to centre Lasi Faletoi.

The advantage allowed the Cavaliers to pressure the defence and was soon rewarded with a try.

To their credit the ARKS hit back soon after with an intercept try to lock Brendan Blackley, a length of the field effort.

The Cavaliers scored again but ARKS had the last say with a try to vice captain Ray Edwards close to the final whistle to help his team secure a 47-15 win.

The ARKS Reserve Grade suffered from lack of numbers but put up an outstanding effort against a big and fresh Cavaliers outfit.

The Cavaliers started strongest with three tries in the first 20 minutes before fullback Greg Allen finally put the ARKS on the board.

The Cavaliers again scored three unanswered tries to start the second half before ARKS replied with 2 length of the field efforts to centre Cameron McStay and lock Alex Johnson, both converted.

But as the game progressed the undermanned ARKS tired, allowing their opponents to add two more tries and win the game 45-19.

The ARKS Women played their first home game of the season against a Perth Irish/Curtin University combination.

Four tries helped the women secure a satisfying 20 – 0 win.

Round 7 action on May 18 will see the ARKS travel to take on Cottesloe.

SOCCER

Cockburn City salvaged a point in their 1-1 draw against Perth Glory on Saturday afternoon.

The round 9 NPLWA action saw Cockburn host the second placed Glory at Dalmatinac Park and the game started in an arm wrestle as both teams exchanged shots but were unable to find the back of the net before the half time whistle.

Glory drew blood first after the break when an unmarked Daniel Stynes headed home a goal in the 56th minute, but Cockburn’s spirit was rewarded soon after when NPL WA leading scorer Daniel Robinson struck in the 72nd minute to nab the equaliser.

Armadale went down 3-1 in their match against ladder leaders Perth SC.

Perth scored the first two goals before Armadale were able to drag one back in the 71st minute courtesy of Adriano Jelenovic.

But Armadale’s hopes of scoring an equaliser were dashed when Perth scored again in injury time to put the result beyond doubt.

After nine rounds Cockburn sit 7th on the NPLWA ladder while Armadale are in 10th.

After a week off, Round 10 action will see Armadale host Sorrento at Alfred Skeet Reserve, Forrestdale from 3pm, May 25.

Cockburn will travel to take on Perth.
